Welcome to the Alchemist's Lair! Here are various writing exercises aimed at tickling your Muse into action. Fear not if your are hitting a dry season and are unable to work something from the contest topics. At the Alchemist's Lair, you might just find your own Philosopher's Stone.

We'll be looking into updating this place! If you have submissions for something below, please, whip them up and send them in!
Laboratory
Alcove
Phototron
MenagerieTo submit a piece to a particular exercise,
send a note to us with the title appropriate to the section. For example, if you are submitting to the Lab, the title should be "
Lab:Exercise Title". If you are submitting to the Menagerie, then it will be "
Menagerie:Creature Name".
To join in the
Alcove, send a note with
Draw A Card as the title. More details will follow in the reply.
We encourage constructive criticism and advice that will help the writer improve their writing. Therefore, please do not be shocked if you submitted a piece for the exercises and found a long, in-depth analysis attached to it later. Exercises are aimed at getting you to write, and critiques should be aimed at helping you improve.
How the Laboratory FunctionsLike the contests, the exercises here are themed or have special requirements. Even though these are just exercises, we would like to gently remind everyone that we only accept originals. Feel free to
note us and we will be happy to put it up for you. As we are a fantasy club, do note that we prefer stories with a fantasy slant to it.

Green. As long as you have something green in the story, or the concept of green (recycle, reuse, reduce), your story is eligible.

How the Alcove FunctionsWe're playing with tarot cards!
No, we won't be doing tarot readings for you. You will. If you want to join the project, send us a note with "The Alcove" in the title, and you will get a picture of a card from the tarot deck with a brief description and its meaning. Your task is to write a story based on the image of the card
OR based on the meaning of the card (if you wish to do a little research)
OR your interpretation of the origin of the card. There is no time limitation for this one.

How the Phototron FunctionsThe Phototron is a place for flash fiction and microfiction.
Flash fiction: prose pieces that are less than 1,000 words.
Microfiction: prose pieces that are less than 500 words.
Sounds easy? Whatever you submit, it must be original and it must be a story. It cannot be a description, a character's thoughts about himself, or anything that is non-progressive in terms of plot.
Topic: Free expression. There are currently no topics for the
Phototron. As long as your piece qualifies as a flash fiction or microfiction, it is eligible for placement in the Phototron.

How the Menagerie FunctionsEach month, the Menagerie will feature two to five creatures. They will be exhibited for all to appreciate. In return, Pepo, our resident naturalist has asked that FWU members to write a story or a better description than the one provided for creature on exhibit.
Introduction by Pepo
Edited by FWU
Greetings wordsmith. I am Pepo, walker of worlds and traveler of planes. It is my dream to author a compendium of stories and descriptions that befits of the wondrous creatures of the different worlds. Alas, I am but a walker and observer, and I am horrendously poor at crafting descriptions or stories. Hence, I sought refuge here in hopes that the book can be crafted not by my hands, but by the quills of the diligent ones here in the Lair. Every moon, I will bring you a selection of creatures from my own personal collection. Here are this moon's selection:
Dragon
The Dragon by ~Dolarmak
One big misconception is that all dragons are the same, for that is not in the least bit true. There are many different types of Dragons of all sizes colors and shapes. Dragons are most oftenly categorized by Color because they tend to associate and group within their own society by color of their scales. Now even within the colors of Dragons there are 3 Catagories: Metallic, Chromatic, and Crystaline. There are also several subspecies that do not fit in any of these catagories, but we will talk about them last.
HippogriffPepo's description: Lazy eagle lion. Not nice pussy cat when hungry.
BasiliskPepo's description: Medium, fat lizard. Evil, evil eye. Evil, evil eye....
FWU's note: Please refrain from staring too long at the Basilisk's eye. Pepo got into a trance doing so and had to be brought to the infirmary.
OgrePepo's dscription: Big, fat thing. Lousy at chess, good at baseball.
